1. Program Summary

Master Math Word Problems is a great tool to help students become better at solving word problems. Word problems are considered important because they take math into the real world. Unfortunately solving word problems is one of the areas where students have the most difficulties in elementary math. Master Math Word Problems includes randomization features which allow students to revisit the same type of problem without seeing the same problem repeatedly. Some problems are worded a bit tricky, some are just for fun, some are easy, and some are difficult. Optional on-screen tips can help students in deciding which mathematical operation to pursue, but in most cases scratch paper or a calculator will be needed to solve some problems.

The freely distributable version of Master Math Word Problems should be considered trial-ware. It gives you an opportunity to try out the Master Math Word Problems program, but you will be limited in that the program will only allow 3 questions per round and the Mix category can not be selected. However, you can purchase a registration code that once entered into the program will allow you to select 10-50 questions per round and all three difficulty levels can be selected.

4. FAQ

Q: I had Multiply and Divide selected. A question asked gave me the tip "multiply and add". Shouldn't that be in the Mix category?
A: Some questions have a primary and secondary operation. For example, "find the perimeter of a rectangle" requires multiplying the long side by two, multiplying the short side by two, and then adding the results together. This question would appear in the Multiply and Divide category.
* When the Mix category is selected the focus of the problem may be addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. Questions are selected at random from the same banks used by the "Addition and Subtraction" and "Multiplication and Division" categories.
* When Addition and Subtraction is selected the primary operation will be addition or subtraction. If a secondary operation is required it should also be addition or subtraction. You should not see any problems that require mutliplication or division at all.
* When Multiplication or Division is selected the problem will require multiplication or division, but in some cases addition or subtraction may be required to complete the problem.

Q: A problem that asked about percent gave the tip "multiply or divide". Which is it?
A: When multiplying by percent you can perform either operation. For example, if trying to calculate 10% of a total you can multiply by .10 or divide by 10.

Q: What does truncate decimals mean?
A: When truncating a decimal the decimal portion of the number is simply dropped. This means that, for example, both 15.1 and 15.9 simply become 15. Another way to remove a decimal is to round. When rounding 15.1 would become 15, but 15.9 would become 16.
